Gradual Adaptation to Stress (GAS)

Gradual Adaptation to Stress (GAS)

1. The body will adapt to gradual and progressive loads.

When a new stimulus or different activity is introduced, the intensity of training is increased. The stimuli must be well within the capability of the athlete, if this occurs, higher levels of adaptation and, consequently, higher levels of performance can be noticed. Keep in mind the principle of individual variability where and athlete will adapt at his/her own pace and not someone else’s. An excellent lesson for athletes is to be patient and allow the body sufficient time to adapt gradually to the stresses of training.
